Artist Statement

Have you ever stood in an open meadow beneath majestic mountains, trees and grasses swaying in the wind, birds chirping, distant water trickling, feeling the environment around you and just taking it all in? This is where my art transports me, to a special place of reflection, self-expression, wondrous vistas, and unpredictable delights.

My watercolors focus on colorful landscapes and the natural world, but I love to paint a variety of subjects including travel destinations, animals, landmarks, and abstracts; sometimes marrying graphic design influences with my work. Whenever possible, I try to look at things in a different perspective, always with a sense of curiosity and wonder.

My goal is to paint with a focus on the feeling, mood, and emotion of the subject. I usually have a basic plan when beginning a painting, but then I let go and just paint, embracing the spontaneity of the medium and using design principles throughout the process. I love seeing how watercolor moves on the paper, how salt, water spray, tissue, and other devices can be used to create textures; and how these things can create surprising outcomes.
